One of the most exciting programs in our calendar recently wrapped up it’s tenth instalment! These January school holidays, the Kites and VisAbility LEGO® Group Program welcomed one new master builder to the crew and saw the return of five smiling faces.
Our LEGO® based groups offer a fun and engaging way for children to collaborate, achieve goals and develop essential skills. In this neuro affirming, child-led program, participants are encouraged to work alongside each other in a safe, supportive environment while learning to be flexible, patient and empathetic towards one another.
Throughout the sessions, children had opportunities to share their ideas, explore various activities and work together as a group to make decisions. Key takeaways from the program include practicing negotiation, problem solving and compromise – skills that are crucial for social development.
Some of the fun and creative activities involved:
- Rain cloud in a jar experiment
- Sensory play
- Water play
- Bubbles
- Trampoline
- Retro games
- Marble run
- Life sized Lego man photo booth
- Lego building
- Dress ups
One of the most rewarding aspects of group programs like this is the opportunity for children to make friends. By joining a group of peers who are not only interested in the same activity or subject matter, but also experience the same challenges, creates a strong foundation for friendships that can extend well beyond the program.
“I think we’re friends now” or “Come back to see our friends” were some of the quotes we heard from the children towards the end of the program.
When asked how much they enjoyed the LEGO® group, they rated it a perfect “1000 LEGO® heads out of 10”! While it was sad to say goodbye to our friends, the excitement was evident when everyone responded with a big “YES!” to the question of returning.
At the heart of our LEGO® based groups is the belief that play is not just about fun—it’s an essential tool for growth and connection. We look forward to welcoming more children to our next session!
