It Takes Two to Talk is a successful and popular parent training program created by the Hanen Centre (opens in new window) – a lead centre in language development and research.
Available for children 0-5 years of age with language delay, the course is also suitable for young babies, with a physical disability, such as vision impairment and those who aren’t using intentional words or sounds.
What is the It Takes Two to Talk program?
The It Takes Two to Talk program teaches you, step-by-step, how to become your child’s most important communication teacher.
The program includes:
- Eight training sessions for parenting in small, personalised online groups.
- A pre-program consultation for you and your child with the speech-language therapist.
- Three individual visits for you and your child with the speech-language pathologist. In these sessions, you are videoed practicing strategies to help your child achieve specific communication goals. You then both review the video to identify what most benefits your child and what you can modify to help even more.
Why take it?
This valuable program will teach you how to:
- Recognise your child’s stage and style of communication so you know which steps to take next.
- Identify what motivates your child to interact with you, so you’ll know how to get conversations started.
- Adjust everyday routines to help your child take turns and keep interactions going.
- Follow your child’s lead to build confidence and encourage communication.
- Add language to interactions with your child to help them understand language and then use it when they are ready.
- Review the way you play and read books with your child to help them learn language.
- Change the way you speak to your child so that they’ll understand and learn new words.
